What Does a Whole-Home Humidifier Do?

A whole-home humidifier works in conjunction with heating and cooling equipment to add humidity to your indoor air supply as air circulates through the home. Humidifiers keep relative humidity levels balanced in the proper range to curb dry air issues without causing problems that result when there is too much moisture in your air.

Three main types of whole-home humidifiers are available for use in your central Illinois home:

  • Bypass humidifiers are installed on bypass ducting outside your furnace. As air passes through the ducts, the unit adds moisture via its water panel to bring humidity into the balanced range. When the HVAC system runs, the system’s blower fan distributes humidified air throughout your home. These units only add humidity when the HVAC system runs.
  • Fan-powered humidifiers add humidity to your air in the same way bypass humidifiers do, except they are equipped with their own dedicated fan. This means the humidifier is able to run even when the HVAC system is not cycling.

Steam humidifiers create steam which is added to the air that circulates through your system instead of using a water panel to add moisture. They have the highest capacity and are able to add more moisture to your air each day than other models.

Why Should You Install a Whole-Home Humidifier?

A whole-home humidifier offers great benefits for your household:

  • Greater coverage than portable models, and no need to move equipment between rooms.
  • Protect your family from dry air issues such as dry and cracked skin, chapped lips and irritations of the eyes and nasal passages.
  • Protect your home from dry air damage such as creaky floorboards, ill-fitting door jambs, gaps around woodwork due to constriction and damage to sensitive wood furnishings.
  • Reduce heating energy consumption as the body feels warmer at lower temperatures when air is properly humidified.
